Shingles (a poem)

Written during a workshop at today’s Poets in the Park event in Redmond, WA…

The shingles, in layers, form the roof.
The shingles, so layered, hide the gaps.
The gaps between the shingles, though not visible, are still there.
The gaps between the shingles hide beneath each new layer.

This roof of layered shingles and their accompanying gaps keeps out the rain.
This roof of layered shingles and their accompanying gaps covers a multitude of sins.
The multitude of sins beneath the roof of layered shingles grows with each passing second.
The multitude of sins growing beneath the roof of layered shingles will soon seep out through the gaps.
The gaps between the layered shingles will reveal themselves as they leak.
The gaps between the layered shingles, once revealed as they leak, will expand to cover the roof.
When the gaps between the shingles expand to cover the roof, the roof will disappear.
When the gaps between the shingles expand until the roof disappears, the house will collapse upon itself.
