When everything else evaporates or vaporises (NaPoWriMo 2017 Day 29 alternate poem)

This was my initial attempt at the Day 29 poem. I initially posted my second attempt because I felt this first one was too literal. Now that I look at it again, it really isn’t; it just lacks an emotional center (at least, for me it does).

When everything else evaporates or vaporises

Of all these emotions
accumulated and stored

of the little aches and pains
catalogued in memory

of premonitions
brought on by changes in weather

of those nagging feelings
of something coming on—
or going down

of what once hardened
sometimes fractured and healed
then grew brittle over time

of the wishes once fought for
eyes closed, with a single pull
over the empty plate

In the end
all that’s left are bones
